The leach field is where treated wastewater is dispersed into the soil. When it stops accepting or distributing water properly, the symptoms can appear in the yard or throughout the plumbing system.
Possible Signs of a Leach Field Problem
- Mushy soil or standing water near the drain field
- Unusually bright or fast-growing grass over part of the field
- Persistent sewage odors outdoors
- Slow drains, gurgling fixtures or wastewater backups
- Problems that return soon after the tank is pumped
Finding the Cause
Similar symptoms can come from a full tank, blocked line, damaged pipe, distribution-box problem or a saturated drain field. The system should be evaluated before deciding whether cleaning, a targeted repair or replacement is appropriate.
Repair or Replacement
When practical, isolating the failed component can limit disturbance and cost. More extensive damage or an exhausted field may require a new drain-field design and installation. The right approach depends on the property, system condition and applicable requirements.
